This past June, Jungle Mamas ran one its Safe Birth and Family Health workshops in the community of Wampuik. This last workshop was considered one of the most successful ones in the history of the Jungle Mamas workshops; it set records in attendance and in the level of active participation from the women who attended. Tsapik had the pleasure of being one of them.
In each workshop, Jungle Mamas employees teach about the use of a safe birth kit. Each birth kit contains maternal postpartum pads, cotton diapers to measure the amount of bleeding once the baby is born, strings to tie and cut the umbilical cord, two pairs of sanitary gloves, hand soap, a sterile sheet to measure the bleeding and maintain the space clean, a candle for night births, a traditional scarf to wrap the baby, and baby clothes for the first months.
Tsapik is from Wampuik in the Ecuadorian province of Morona Santiago. She was one of the most enthusiastic women at the workshop in June, wanting to know as much as she could absorb on how to bring her baby into this world under the safest conditions possible. Thank you, Milind, for your generous donation of a birth kit to Tsapik!

Ilda is about to have a baby in a few months and she was worried about giving birth. It has been custom for many years for women from her community, the Achuar people living in the jungles of Ecuador, to give birth by themselves in the rainforest with absolutely no assistance. This led to them bleeding out many times. Thanks to the safe birth kit that Jungle Mamas is implementing in the workshops, which has materials to solve these worries, many women such as Ilda are far safer and healthier when it comes to giving birth. Ilda is now much less anxious about the coming months. Thank you, Hardeep, for donating to this worthy cause!

Aurora was one of the 40 Achuar women who attended the Jungle Mamas Safe Birth and Family Health workshop in the community of Wampuik, Ecuador this past June. In this workshop, she learned about safe birth, women’s and community health and well-being, human reproduction, and family planning. The goal of Jungle Mamas is to empower these women with the tools necessary to have safe births in their territory.
Aurora now feels much more competent to have her baby under safe conditions within her community. She is relieved that she will not have to travel many hours to the nearest hospital for her birth. Thanks to your generous donation, Barbara, Aurora now has community-wide support to ensure she will have a safe birth.

For Melida, this kit provides her with basic materials that are needed for her to have a safe birth and assure her and her baby’s well-being. This could not have been possible if it weren’t for your kind generosity towards our program, Katie! We thank you so much!

Nina, a woman living in an Achuar community in the jungles of Ecuador, is shortly expecting her new baby. Thanks to the last Jungle Mamas Safe Birth and Family Health workshop that we ran in June in the community of Wampuik, she now knows much more about how to bring her baby into this world under the safest conditions possible. Traditionally these women give birth all by themselves in the rainforest — this is the main factor that contributes to the high infant and mother mortality rate of the Achuar people. With these workshops we seek to give these women, like Nina, basic knowledge on safe birth practices, mother and infant health and pre-natal postpartum care. Our intention is to offer them this knowledge that we have from the western world and at the same time preserve their culture so that it is stronger and healthier for the future. Nina, after attending our workshop and receiving her birth kit, feels much more confident about giving birth to her baby. None of this could have been possible if it weren’t for your generous support, Michelle, that lets all of this happen in the depths of the Amazon rainforest.

Isabel was one of the lively women who participated in the Safe Birth and Family Health Workshop that Jungle Mamas ran this past June in the community of Wampuik, a community located in the province of Morona Santiago, Ecuador. These workshops are primarily given to pregnant women of the territory and aim to provide basic education in women’s and community health and well-being, human reproduction and family planning, and most importantly, in how to execute a safe birth. These women live in communities that are far out of reach of any hospital. Thank you so much, UBS, for supporting Isabel in bringing her baby into this world and for your solidarity with Jungle Mamas!
